We perform transient multiphase flow simulations of hypothetical blowout scenarios to identify and evaluate potential flow rates and kill requirements by use of our unique software, OLGA®-WELL-KILL, which is tailor-made for well and well control simulations.
We develop detailed relief well plans from the basis of our experience with actual incidents. The relief well plans will identify potential constraints and propose design solutions with details on spud locations, well trajectories, ranging (homing in) strategies and intersection methods.
A patented piece of specialist subsea equipment that enables operators to stop a blowout from prolific reservoirs safely and efficiently via a single relief well.
We develop detailed blowout contingency plans that meet operator specific requirements and governmental regulations and standards (e.g. NORSOK D-010). Blowout contingency plans will typically include identification of potential scenarios with evaluations of intervention methods, mitigation options and kill requirements.
We perform real time simulations based on MWD data to reduce the cost and risk associated with drilling operations, for example; provide the required support for drilling the entire reservoir section without setting an additional casing string.
We pre-magnetize casing as a preventive measure to reduce the cost and risk associated with relief well drilling operations. A pre-magnetized casing will improve the likelihood of a successful intersection, especially in challenging ranging situations such as shallow reservoirs and salt formations.
We participate as an integral part of spill drill teams and share our extensive experience from live incidents combined with transient flow simulation competence. Outcome of our contribution includes soft shut-in procedures and cap and containment design.
We verify that the BOP and its associated well control equipment are maintained, inspected, certified and tested in compliance with regulatory requirements and international standards.
We offer advanced training courses in the area of blowout contingency and regulatory requirements (e.g. Principles and contents of NORSOK D-010).
“Gaining access rights to the RWIS, as a contingency measure, enabled us to build a business case for larger wells to be developed, allowing us to meet production targets with less investment.”
To evaluate and design casing magnetization requirements for a major Norwegian operator, a shallow gas reservoir was to be explored where the design of relief well for potential blowout was extremely challenging, due to difficulties associated with ranging and detection.
What We Did
Add Energy designed a relief well utilizing passive magnetic ranging techniques and magnetized the casing shoe track to prepare the well for challenging ranging operations
The magnetization enabled the operator to obtain consent for drilling and exploration.

In certain regions of the world, and for some operators, regulations and internal procedures mandate that fields cannot be developed unless the operator can demonstrate that the well can be intercepted and controlled via a single relief well drilling operation, as opposed to multiple relief wells, which is usually the norm.

Safety is always the number one priority in drilling operations, but this can often impact an operator’s ability to reach their targets and optimize future production. However, there are ways engineers can increase the efficiency of field development and maximise production, without compromising safety.

Whilst production optimization creates significant cost benefits for a business, it is critical to note that additional risks are introduced when bigger bores are developed. These include, but are not limited to:
