Our well engineering experts design, plan and manage all types of exploration, production, storage and disposal wells, across vertical, horizontal or multi-laterals; depleted reservoir or HPHT; onshore or offshore; subsea or platform; shallow or deep water; remote location and harsh environments.

Concept, Screening, Feasibility and Field Development Studies

We create a range of development scenarios covering different well designs, rig strategies and execution options, and link each case to accurate life of field cost estimates in order to identify optimal development options.

Well Design

We establish a design basis and utilize experience from offset wells to optimize hole sizes, well profile, sections lengths, casing/liner sizes, mud and cement to achieve the objectives of the well (explore, produce, inject) in a safe and cost efficient way. Stresscheck™ as well as production load assessments (WellCat™) are used to calculate casing loads.

Completion Design

We provide a fit for purpose engineering solution to meet field development plans, lifecycle well integrity and production requirements. We select the best technology for the job, supported by tubing stress analysis, upper and lower completion design, metallurgy assessment and sand control and fluids design. WellCat™ is used to calculate temperature profiles and production tubing stresses.

Well Test Design

We specify the well test string and components and surface processing equipment to achieve the objectives of the flow test. WellCat™ is used to calculate test string loads.

Abandonment Design

We assess various abandonment solutions for single or multiple wells to ensure that we achieve a leak tight, regulatory compliant and cost efficient design. Together with our well integrity and intervention experts we can assess and rank entire well portfolios to optimize P&A strategies.

Technical Incident Investigations

We assist clients with technical investigation of unplanned events (i.e. packer or cementing failures, stuck pipe, etc.) or significant cost overruns. This may include assessments of the organisation’s capacities, competencies and structure.

Advisors and Consultants

We provide personnel to work as integrated members of our client’s team, in the office, on the rig or at the well site.

Feasibility and Cost Estimates - Renewables

Add Energy conduct concept feasibility and cost estimates for deep thermal wells - applying our experience from the O&G sector - adjusted to a lower cost environment.

Field Conversion to Carbon Capture Sequestration (CO2)

Providing assessment of converting an existing field / reservoir into a CO2 storage vessel, including well integrity and risk review for out of zone injection.

Australia’s leading Well Intervention workshop OWI AUS is going virtual this year to ensure the well intervention community remains up to date, engaged and connected, and will be hosted by the Offshore Network.

This year, Add Energy’s EVP of Drilling and Well Engineering, Eduardo Robaina has been selected to moderate a virtual workshop and webinar at the event on “Integrity Excellence”, with NOPSEMA’s Well Integrity Manager, Mark Bourne and Sarah Robertson, a Well Engineering Supervisor form ExxonMobil.

Behind the scenes with the Deepwater Horizon Investigation team

On the evening of April 20th, 2010, a well integrity failure allowed hydrocarbons to escape from the Macondo well into Transocean’s Deepwater Horizon rig, resulting in explosions and fire in which 11 people lost their lives and 17 were injured. This incident caused a spill of national significance as hydrocarbons continued to flow from the reservoir for 87 days, resulting in the most expensive oil spill in history.

Add Energy were called in to be part of the core investigation team, to independently investigate the events that led up to the incident. Our Head of Well Control, Morten H. Emilsen was brought into this tightknit team of experts to analyse and examine all possible causes and to provide expert recommendations to enable prevention of similar events in the future.


We interviewed Morten to understand the part that Add Energy played in this crucial investigation and what he learned from working on one of the biggest hydrocarbon disasters to date.
