Leading Well Control Advisory Delivers Complex Plug and Abandonment Operation in South-East Africa

30 May 2023

The leading specialist of well control services, Add Energy, has been involved in a challenging Plug and Abandonment (P&A) operation in South-East Africa. The aim of the work scope was to ensure the safe and cost-efficient abandonment of a well while mitigating existing operational and environmental risks.

The successfully delivered P&A operations involved the placement of multiple barriers in the wellbore to isolate the reservoir and fluid-bearing formations. The primary objective was to establish well integrity, ensuring that the plugged well remained secure and free from leaks post-abandonment. To achieve this, permanent well barriers had to span the entire wellbore's cross section.

However, before new permanent plugs could be installed, existing wellbore barriers with uncertain integrity had to be removed. The removal process was crucial to ensure a successful P&A operation, as there was a high risk of hydrocarbons already present in the well that could potentially surface during the operation.

Add Energy, part of ABL Group, played a crucial role and was actively involved in mitigating these risks and devising a comprehensive plan for the operation. The teams’ nearly 35 years’ well control expertise enabled them to navigate the complexities of the project successfully.
